Day 250 | Sunday, September 6 | 2009

Wasted...

Ding Dong. Ring the bell. The students are back. Now watch as the streets are flooded with cretans, vampires, and philistines. People who suck out the blood of this town and vomit it back up on the sidewalks. Useless chatter, useless noise and violence. The degenerates have sprung a new bud; tack another one up for the party boys and girls, the gorilla men who are cock-guided, and the girls who don't know the difference and sell their bodies as meat.

Oh, ... and their are some really offensive things too about the students being back.

I would be a little more passionate about this all if I had not witnessed the exact same process year after year. It starts out as not just one thing that reminds me of my disappointment in the human race but as little vignettes or collections of things I see -- a girl sullenly vomiting into a street trash can, some meat head barking up the alley, or a group of practically naked young women swaggering down the brick streets. All in all, it always leads to the same place of feeling disappointed in the decisions that people make on how to use their time in the most selfish of ways. In the end, all of this bizarre destruction and loot is about people being selfish, wanting attention, and pleasure for themselves.

Anyway, enough about that. Last night was very lovely, despite the primordial roar and chaos of the New Blood.

Caitlin played so wonderfully and I do not know if she realizes how well she did. Her family was there and all of our close friends have had nothing but glowing things to say about her performance. I felt honored and heart-warmed to sit on stage with her as she played so poignantly and vulnerably. I was also reminded of how far I think she has come as a performer and singer-songwriter. I remember seeing her play way back when, before we had even met. Even back then I thought she was great but I believe she has improved tremendously since then and I feel lucky to see her sort of come into her own as an artist. Last night she played five songs (all originals). The names of the songs were:

Untitled
Supposed to Be
Meet Me in the Forest
Spider Dreams
Dream Avenue

I really love all of her songs but I especially love Dream Avenue. Dream Avenue currently sits and number 1 atop my iTunes top 25 most played songs of all time. I used to watch the video of her playing the song when I was in Ecuador and missing her/feeling homesick. The song, like the girl, is simply magic.

Oh yeah...I forgot to say that after looking up I noticed today is day 250 of Beans with Garlic. Woo! It is weird to think that it has been that long.

Howl...

Today marks the 200th day of the year; the 200th entry of Beans With Garlic.  So what better way to signify this occasion than to have this elegant mug howling into the summer air in celebration.

This is Penny Kraus, the loving and quirky family dog of the Kraus family.  I will not go into too much vivid detail, but Penny has quite the 'personality' of her own.  She is one of the rare dogs of the Earth that can talk and her voice, too, is unique.  Pinging in your ears, her voice resonates with discordant shrill tones.  She also has this obsession that she is my girlfriend.  I don't know what life would be like for me, though, without Penny.   She is truly one of a kind.

Velas...

First day back in classes from the one week absence.  There was a big misunderstanding in terms of scheduling today but it all worked out.  It is really hard to explain the system here but to put it simply -- classes alternate every week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday classes and Tuesday and Thursday classes).  What was a Monday, Wednesday, and Friday class last week is a Tuesday and Thursday class this week and vice versa.  Anyway, no one really knew what the justifiable schedule was for this week so we did a combination of both classes.  It's really complicated but things got worked out in the end and now we all know what classes will take place on what days for the rest of the week.

Really, all we have left to do is push hard for these next three weeks.  Our final exams are on May 21 and 22.  Like I have said before, classes here are not as long as they would be at OU but there are many challenges here that make this quarter as hard (if not harder) than a quarter at OU.  I am just trying to stay on the positive side of things -- I am really looking forward to coming back to Ohio to be with Caitlin and today marks that I only have exactly one month left in Ecuador.  A month from today I will be flying from Quito to Houston and then Houston to Columbus.  There are a lot of things that I am going to miss from Ecuador, too, but nothing in the world can take the place of being able to be there with the one you love.  I am really excited.

Another little mile marker for Beans with Garlic -- today is the 125th entry of the year.

Día 100 | Jueves, el 9 de Abril | 2009

Jueves Santo...

Today has been perfect.  I am feeling much better about a lot of things.  I got the chance to talk to Dale, Caitlin and Leslie -- three of my favorite people in the world.

Plus, today is Beans with Garlic's 100-day anniversary.

Feeling good :)

Day 75 | Sunday, March 15 | 2009

Lagoon...

Today is the 75th day of Beans with Garlic (at least having the daily entries).  This is special, to an extent.  I am glad it's made it this far.  Now only 290 more days to go!!

Today, on the other hand, was not a special day.  Lots of work and mind-numbing worrying.  This will all be over soon.

Day 17 | Saturday, January 17 | 2009

A nice rest...

It seems like today has been infinite.  Today started out in a very nice way by sleeping in and being woken up with the sunlight seeping into my room.  Rem and Amanda were both out of town and the dogs were not too loud so it was comforting to get to relax and wake up at about 9:30.  Afterward, Caitlin and I had breakfast at Casa Nueva and then I showered packed and hit the road to Cincinnati to meet up with my parents.  My parents have just recently (as in yesterday) moved back to Ohio after living in Switzerland for the past five years.  My meeting them in Cincinnati is a welcoming gesture and also to help them in any way I can.

We spent most of the day at retail stores looking for deals on washer/dryers, televisions, and furniture.  I meant to get some schoolwork done but it just didn't happen.  We ate dinner at an Italian restaurant called Carrabba's.  Carrabba's is kind of like an Olive Garden type of place -- probably a national chain -- but it still has a nice flair to it that is comforting.  I ate lasagna that was very (and perhaps too much) filling.  We spent most of the meal talking about the future -- as it pertains to what I will be doing in the next year or so.  One thing is certain that I need to fulfill my Spanish major requirement of studying abroad.  The difficult thing is that I need to figure out where and when this will happen and how it will work out in relation to the things most important to me -- my relationship with Caitlin and also my living situation(s) and my other degree of Telecommunications.

Nothing is decided right now but something that is likely is that I will study this Spring in Cuenca, Ecuador.  Regardless, I will be doing a lot of preparation work this week to figure out my future in the next year or so.

Additionally and somewhat unrelated -- it is really cool that Beans with Garlic is starting to take a life of its own.  Since I have installed a tracker on the site, I am able to see where visitors come from (not the identity of the visitor) but I have noticed people coming in from Ohio, Minnesota, and even England!  To all of those people, I want so say Welcome!  Thank you for finding me and I hope that you come back regularly to check in on me.  Feel free to leave comments or just peruse at your own discretion.

I am also excited for Beans with Garlic because there is a chance I could get basically a steal on a new camera tomorrow.  Because my parents are buying a lot of appliances for their house, the retail store they are purchasing from also sells cameras.  I have insisted to my father on the possibility of negotiating a price slash on a Nikon D90.  This may or may not happen but we'll see.  If not, I'll continue to shoot on my trusted D40.
